AT LAST, someone who's seen the same problems as I have!!! I'm
experiencing the _EXACT_ same problems - I have a Pentium Pro P6DNF
motherboard with 2 PPros on it at home and I reported this to the l-k
mailing list a week ago but I didn't get a response. :o(

Linux/SMP 1.2.5 exhibits the same problems on my system. 

I'm much encouraged by this report - I have not done this myself yet, but
I suggest that you try recompiling the kernel without SMP and test again -
if my suspicions are correct, it should work just fine in UP. I shall
attempt this tonight.
