I have an IDE-ATAPI CDR as well -- no problems using it as a regular CD.
I haven't messed with writing to it yet. SMP system (dual 400mhz pIIs),
so I doubt that's an issue.

The only "sudden reboots" I've had with recent dev kernels were UDMA
related; turn DMA to my HD off with hdparm and the reboots go away.
Haven't had trouble with the CD drive, though.
