APM + SMP = baaaad
(From what I've heard on the smp list and elsewhere.) APM on laptops
(UP kernel) seems to work quite well. Never tried it on a standalone
box.
I believe that there are also hardware solutions involving UPS and the
serial port -- one can turn off power via the serial port connected to
certain UPS after sync'ing disk and performing most of a shutdown.
