On a single cpu box, I've had a similar problem, ie occational freezing, due to
too tight memory timings; it was just a single timing option in BIOS that caused
the problem; I'll need to reboot and look at BIOS to remember which one.
Think it was either the read-modify-write sequense or the ras-to-cas delay,
relaxing it one step back did the cure.
Dunno if the same might apply to your SMP box
