Actually, I was booting off of floppy.  The machine had SCSI with only an
IDE cdrom installed.  I was using a Buslogic 958, for what it's worth.  I
couldn't get it boot off of the SCSI due to an entirely different problem -
my paritioning put the kernels in an odd spot.  Long story...
