First thing get a 2.0.36 kernel for SMP machines. There was one very
very horrible bug for dual CPUs and another nasty one only affecting 3+ CPU
machines fixed in .36

That bit is worrying. The 2.0.35 SMP crashes shouldnt leave a file system
trashed. That sounds like something far worse may have happened to the
innards of your system
