main question.. are you _sure_ that you are booting the SMP kernel?
Redhat is brain-dead in at least the 5.0 version, as the /etc/lilo.conf
is hard-coded to boot the kernel they install, even if you install the
source and remake the kernel yourself. edit /etc/lilo.conf and make
sure it is trying to execute /boot/vmlinuz, and not
/boot/vmlinuz-something. I've seen this particular problem _way_ too
many times and hope that they have fixed it in 5.2... check your
lilo.conf to see...
