Well, if one were sufficiently motivated, I'm sure that Linux could be made to
work on the Sequent quads/squads even with the console/MDC subsystem in place.
Of course it makes no sense to do so, at least on the high-end hardware. You
are paying extra money for the NUMA capabilities engineered into the quad
which you cannot take advantage of. The new NUMA-Q 1000 midrange systems
however are a much more interesting prospect from this point of view. I'm not
aware of any Sequent plans to offer Linux, but obviously that may change based
on customer demand. There are certainly plenty of in-house users :-)
As to the older hardware, as Jan-Simon says, it's not obvious that it's worth
the effort to port. All the base hardware is custom stuff and the few cards
that aren't are things like the VME comms cards. It would be a major effort to
port. It *might* be worth it if it were done to improve the high-end SMP
scalability of Linux on say a 16+ processor system.
