More information on my SMP PII 350 system and its troubles with the
modem.
Thanks to all who responded with helpful suggestions:
* did I correctly install the kernel image, System map, and modules.
I redid it again this morning, after rm -rf'ing the 2.2.9 mod directories
and had the same behavior, so that is not the problem
* did I have mtrr enabled "that often helps"
made sure I did this morning
* did i have the enhanced real time clock support enabled
made sure I did this morning
* stepping
processor : 0
vendor_id : GenuineIntel
cpu family : 6
model : 5
model name : Pentium II (Deschutes)
stepping : 1
and
processor : 1
vendor_id : GenuineIntel
cpu family : 6
model : 5
model name : Pentium II (Deschutes)
stepping : 2
so they are different. But I am pretty sure that this isn't related. The
reason that I am sure that the stepping isn't the problem is that
when I first upgraded to 2.2.5 I built the kenerl with SMP by accident and
I got exactly the same modem behavior. If anyone doubts me on this
I'd be happy to remove the second processor and rerun the kernel.
* did the patches apply in upgrading from 2.2.5 to 2.2.9.
Since i started from a fresh 2.2.3 source tree (ie.. I didn't upgrade to
rh6.0) and since I did't find any error messages or .rej files i think that
we can rule that one out.
* trying the noapic glag in lilo ...
haven't tried that one yet
In addition to recompiling I tried a few other things
this morning. I tried removing the soundcard and
switching the modem back and forth in the two isa slots.
I also tried changing Com and IRQ settings (mmm... jumpers)
from ttyS0 irq=4 to ttyS1 irq=3 and got similar results
on both.
HOWEVER, playing with minicom in the process I did discover
one more clue. I have the feeling that this is telling me
something, but I don't know what. I am hoping that this will
ring a bell in some guru's brain.
With minicom -s you can tell it which ttyS to connect to.
In each case if I try to connect to the ttyS that doesn't
correspond to the COM port dip switch setting on the card I
get no response whatsoever.
Connecting to the correct port with minicom I'd get the
initialization string to appear in whole or part on the screen.
Still no response from the modem.. if I type at
i should get an OK back, but nothing. However the
modem is listening... if i type atd and then a number it
dials. Dialing into my ISP I was able to hear it handshake properly
and then when I would normally see the banner and login prompt I get
nothing, till i start punching keys. On a keystroke it would plop up
the next 5-6 characters of the information coming in off of the modem.
So what does this mean?
thanks for taking the time to read this and if this rings any bells please
respond, since I am in need of inspiration.
Cheers,
chris
P.S. I was using minicom as root, so it's not a permission thing.
Who are you? What do you want? Why are you here?
.... Where are you going?
