Roland,

After you compile the kernel, cp /usr/src/linux/System.map to /boot/System.map,
that should solve that error message.

There's a version of top that works with two processors.  Look on freshmeat or
check out the list archives, it was discussed a few weeks back.  xosview is
also pretty decent (if you are running X).
