Does Win98 not run (on only one processor) in the dual system? I'd have
expected it to just ignore the extra processor, just like a UP kernel
does on a dual system.

If Win9X runs on the dual, just leave them both in and be happy. It
will sit there in idle mode and not generate any significant amount of
heat. Remember, the heat is generated when instructions are executed
and current is flowing along all of those itty-bitty pathways. On some
systems you can actually hear the cooling fans start to labor when you
crank up a calculation...

There are several other interesting options as well. You can obviously
install the win9X dual boot and run linux on it when you're not gaming
or using MS office or whatever it is you still need Win9X for. Then
there is VMware (IIRC), which I recently saw on a friend's box and which
allows you to run Win9X as a linux task in a window. Very nifty, and
for $100 even moderately inexpensive. If it runs on a dual, you could
actually USE one processor under linux while running windows on the
other and task switch with a few mouse clicks (or whatever they use to
key between the environments).
