Thanks!  I was able to set OS mode to UNIXWare 7, but was unable to find any reference to APIC in the Compaq SystemConfig utility.  However, it booted up, complained a lot about invalid mtrr table entries and such, and then finished the boot process just fine.  I now have 2 CPUs showing in /proc/cpustats.  Could the errors in the beginning be related to my inability to set APIC to "full table mode"?

Thanks again!

In the BIOS, you have to set OS mode to "Unixware 7" and APIC to "full
table mode". This should work.
