IMHO, you're lucky it runs.

I would try unplugging a disk, the CDROM, the AWE64
and then run your seti@ tests with the xsnow screensaver.

You said that it fails when X is running.  This exercises the busses
more than sitting at a console.  I'd guess you are marginally driving your busses
and the ringing on the busses (from low voltage) is what's killing you.
