2.2.13 does not change the APIC code, so it could just be lucky timings,
or some unknown effect. At this point i do not rule out that this might be
a problem with Linux, but it seems more likely to be a hw-related problem.

is your box stable if you edit 2.3.25's arch/i386/kernel/smpboot.c file
and remove the 3 lines handling APIC_LVTERR?

or, does the box stabilize if you compile 2.3.25 as a Pentium, not PPro?
