Thanks, this worked.  I have a Logitech marble trackball which works in
ps/2 or serial mode and I just switched it, recompiled my kernel to take
out ps/2 mouse support, rebooted, and everything seems to work.  No more
problems in kernel 2.2.15pre10 SMP.

I wonder if the ps/2 mouse support in the kernel is not SMP-safe or if it
is just a problem on my machine.  I'll stick around this mailing list for
a few days in case someone wants more information on my setup here.
