This has happened to me with SuSE and TurboLinux, the new installation wants
to make its own UID numbers and "wxyz" or "unknown" is a UID that has not yet
been given a number (i.e., the /etc/password and so on was wiped during
installation)

chown has a recusive flag, as root in ~john chown -R john:users would have done
the job. (It took me a while to work this out)

A bit late but I hope it is useful for next time.
Cheers,
