2.3.99-pre6 development kernel is rather old and definitely had a
lot of problems. The BP6 has its own issues, but is definitely
supported and should work fine with Linux, esp. if you stay away
from the IDE controllers. BP6 is quite popular and gets a 3.7
out of 5.0 in LhD scores, but also many 5.0's from happy users. See:

The first thing to do is to try 2.4.0-test1-ac21, released in the
past 24 hours, as well as 2.2.14 (or 2.2.17) stable kernels, and
see if the problem persists.
