    AMD PCNet 32 ... hum I guess I already had troubles with an 
AMD Ethernet chip driver in an old Dell SMP boxen

   It might be a good idea to plug another kind of ethernet card
in one of the not very loaded machines. I had good success with 
EEPro100, Tulip or 3Com may be stable as well.
