This may (or may not) be a useful suggestion for you:
A few months ago, I had a similar problem: two dual PII/Adaptec 2940/2.2.14-ish
systems that exhibited hard lock-ups during either disk-to-tape backups or
heavy disk-to-disk copying, but that worked fine when the SMP
option was dropped. After trying various patches and tweaks, I ended up
swapping hardware, and found that replacing the Adaptec controllers
with Advansys Ultra 240 controllers eliminated the hangs on both boxes.
