Okay, having fighted with a BP6 on rpmfind.net for nearly 6 months
using lots of IDE I/O (without the HPT66) using promise boards and
even with the 3Ware contoller, my conclusion is:
It's worth dropping 200$ for a new SMP card and 2 riser boards
for mounting the Celeri in Slot 1
You will save yourself a lot of troubles, lost hours and possibly
data.

The manual of the BP6 comes with a big warning "SMP support is experimental".
I now believe it's due to the fact they knew they shipped an undebugged board
not to the nature of the use of the Celeron in SMP enviroment.
