I have seen this message too.
I have 4.03-pre2 and a external parallel port ditto 2G.
And here is the trick I use to make things work.

I have to boot to win95 first
(assuming you have installed the ditto software on the win95 side)
And during the win95 bootup,
I actually see the orange light on the tape drive flashes.
So I know there is contact.
After which I warm reboot to linux
Then somehow linux will see the ditto.

If I don't boot win95 first, I get that Got 0x00 message.
I've been pulling my hair out on this one.
But it works for me.
