Yes. If you're using tar for your backup, add M to the list of options.
For example, this command:
tar -cvpMf /dev/qft0 /
will:
c - create an archive
v - print all file names to standard output
p - preserve permissions
M - span multiple tapes (with a prompt after each tape fills up)
f /dev/qft0 - destination
/ - source (all files)
