Same here. initially I upgraded my 14.04 mythtv version and thought it to be a compatibility issue but it keeps crashing on a freshly installed 16.04 too.
I also upgraded my backend to 16.04 with the mythbuntu image and interestingly enough that machine is working just fine, running a combined backend/frontend. mythtv 0.28 just keeps crashing on any other machine despite using the same repositories as my backend machine.
