those PTP cameras ... there are a fair number of folk
(like me :) who prefer such Java tools where they're
available.  And jPhoto has been working quite nicely
for over a year now.

There are really three options.  The standard is to use
PTP, some use mass storage, and older ones use some
custom protocol such as those from DigitaOS, Olympus,
and so forth.  I think it's fair to say most now are "older",
not supporting any standard protocol.  (And then there
are webcams, which are a different kind of beast.  With
USB 1.1 they're low res video, but on USB 2.0 they should
get to be quite nice ... :)

Since PTP was designed for digital cameras, it offers
a lot of facilities that Mass Storage doesn't.  Stuff like
remote control of camera settings, image capture, and
so forth.
