I feel like I'm not getting anywhere here, but I suppose I have eliminated
another possibility so I have made progres. I downloaded jphoto and tried
"jphoto cameras" which returned nothing. Doing anything else with jphoto
gave an error message saying there were no cameras available. I guess
this rules out PTP, leaving:
a) some mass-storage variant, in which case I should add a line to
unusual_devs.h
b) a custom protocol, in which case I should add support to gphoto2 for my
camera using libusb.

I'm at a bit of a loss however, on the question of how to decide between
these two. I found a pdf document called "USB device class definition for
mass storage devices" that I'm going to read through and see if there is
any similarity with the logs I got from the camera's Windows driver. I
think I'll also email the current maintainer of the usb mass-storage
driver. In the mean time, if anyone can think of a faster/better way to
decide between a) and b) I'd be really interested to hear it.

Best wishes,
                Bill.
