Hi

Unfortunaltely, I had a couple of problems with ehci on usb-storage since my last report. I've applied ehci-hcd micro-patch from David. I use 2.4.21-rc8-ac1 (basicaly equivalent to 2.4.21-ac1 + ehci-hcd micro patch USB
wise).

2.4.21-ac1 + micro-patch is currently your best bet for stable EHCI on 2.4 kernels, yes. I can't vouch for any rc8-ac1 though. (Or, 2.4.21 plus the 2.4 patch I posted plus micro-patch.)

(The patches Greg posted yesterday don't have all
those updates. I'll prep a 2.4.22-pre patch against
what he sent to Marcelo, which will help sort out
the current confusion about "which patches".)

Also there was a patch from David with the subject line:
"[patch 2.5.70] ehci, fix qh re-activation problem"
Does this problem exist in some form in 2.4?

Of course ... but the fix is in 2.4.21-ac1, and will be in the next 2.4 EHCI patch I post.

The problems:

If you don't have the current patch set, that'll explain quite a lot of these. Several bugs were covering for each other, so fixing some of them would highlight others.

And then there are problems with usb-storage, hardware,
and other drivers...

4.

About possible performance improvement on 2.5 ehci/usb-storage: I've tested with 2.5.71, and I don't see a significant improvement over 2.4. (Both are arround 7.7 MB/s for read, 10 MB/s for write). Disk can do arround
40 MB/s reads on IDE.

Then maybe the USB-to-IDE adapter you're using is the issue. From what I've seen, 7.7 MB/sec stats from "hdparm -tT" is slow even for 2.4 ... with a hardware ceiling, smarter kernels can't help much. With more vendors on the market now, surely some products will be slower than others.

On the other hand, you should use current 2.5 code too;
last night's snapshot from Linus (2.5.73-bk2) has the
relevant ehci patches.
