The kernel driver is removed - its gone.

libusb is a library which allows userspace software to access USB hardware. Totally seperate from the kernel - the kernel doesn't "load" libusb (although libusb does use kernel structure to do the work).

I don't have a scanner myself, but I would expect, yes, you need to compile sane-backends with libusb support (thats if its not on by default).

I think there is some extra SANE config needed as well - there is a previous post on this list describing some experiences there.
