This problem was submitted to bugme.osdl.org as Bug 2820 - no response. I'll be happy to work on this but don't know where to start - thanks for any advice.
Distribution:Slackware 9.1, generic kernels. Hardware Environment:USB ZIP250 and SmartCard Reader Neodio ND5010 (in place of EPSON 1650 Scanner).
Problem Description:Plugging in (or attempting to mount) ND5010 smartcard reader eventually kills the 2-port usb hub. In 2.6.6, processes started by khubd, usb-storage and scsi_eh_1 enter DW state according to ps command. Also, mount /zip (/dev/sda4) or mount /smc (/dev/sdb1) enter D state. In 2.6.7-rc2, states switch from DW to SW after 1 or 2 minutes, but usb devices are not functioning; umount /zip then causes sda to disappear from /sys/block. Everything worked OK with 2.6.4. ZIP drive and scanner work fine on this usb hub with all kernels. Clues from dmesg in 2.6.6 with USB DEBUG enabled - these messages (from transport.c) are listed at/before failure: -- babble (indicates -EOVERFLOW has been set by something) -- cancelling URB
Steps to reproduce: Plug in ND5010 SmartCard reader with media inserted with ZIP unmounted or plug in reader and attempt to mount if ZIP is already mounted.
Failure still occurs with 2.6.7-rc3. However, behavior seems generally better and [usb-storage] process stays in state SW rather than DW. Also, /sys/block/sda/ and /sys/block/sdb/ disapper and mount attempts fail with no such device rather than entering D process state and hanging the console window.
