I'm running 7.1 on a Vaio SR17k. I don't know what Redhat's normal
kernel configuration is, but my impression is that not many USB
devices are enabled. I didn't try very hard to get it to work,
though; I figured I'd be better off with a newer kernel, since
USB developers have been doing great work on USB support.
I'm currently running 2.4.9 and have had good luck with USB devices
(I don't have a printer, but an external mouse works, as do serial
and storage devices). Redhat's 2.4.2 sources didn't actually compile
for me (syntax error), so I had to download a new kernel anyway.
Are you trying to use the USB mouse under X? Do you already know
about how to configure a second mouse? I thought I was having driver
problems, since it didn't see the USB mouse, until I found the very
clear mini-howto on using a USB mouse as a second mouse under X:
