thanks for your reply. 
I tried your suggestion but no luck so far. It is getting better if the 
JB is switched on before. But I get no mountable device. 
I tried it now with USB 1.1 and USB 2.0 (using a PCMCIA card)
I used the USB 2 patch for 2.4.18 and also tried 2.4.19-pre2. 
It doesn't make any difference; see below. 
The device is recognized. The usb-storage driver
is loaded but there is no /dev/sda1 instantiated.

Any clues?
