>It isn't possible to tell for sure, but I'd guess a hardware problem with the >keyboard (since you said the mouse works, presumably with the same port).
I have switched ports back and forth, with the same result: The mouse works, the keyboard doesn't. :-/ Seems to me like it can't be only the keyboard that is the problem, since it's working just fine with my desktop PC. It must be something else (maybe a combination of components) as well. Personally, I think the BIOS might not be up to it. But how could that be figured out? =:-o Before I changed the BIOS setting from "USB Legacy Support enabled" to "... disabled", no OS would even detect the keyboard properly. Now all do, but can't use the keyboard. Sounds fishy to me ... The Toshiba manual suggests that connecting an external USB keyboard is a breeze. Well, it just isn't. :-( >Is this with _only_ the keyboard connected. Looks like you have a compact >flash reader connected. Is this built in? The laptop has a smart media slot, so I guess that's where that comes from. The only external USB device connected to one of the USB ports when I did "cat /proc/bus/usb/devices" was the keyboard. >Hardware problems aren't that easy to diagnose, but a device not showing any >connection is normally something toasted :( This is getting really weird ... If some piece of hardware is toasted, then (1) why is the keyboard working with the desktop PC and (2) why is the USB mouse working with the laptop? I figure it must have something to do with the laptop, since the keyboard is detected, but unusable, with all three OS (Linux, W2K, WinME), and works fine with the desktop PC. My hope is that this particular keyboard and this particular laptop do not get along well, but another keyboard would. If some piece of the laptop USB components is dead, that wouldn't be too nice (or cheap). :-( I'm just about desperate enough to try a 2.5.x kernel, but I'm not having much hope. And it seems impossible to narrow the search and pin the problem to any one component or a combination thereof. Or may it isn't?
