The PDA was not being recognized om the USB bus.  I had compiled usbcore.o 
with verbose debugging (or whatever it's called), so on each connect I get 
a lot of info in /var/log/messages.  Before that, /proc/bus/usb did not 
exist.  When it did exist, I had the usbdevfs filesystem mounted on it.
