o For the last year I've been running a system with a Kensington
webcam (se401 driver) and a Philips webcam (pwc/pwcx driver). After
much patching on my part and lots of help from this list, I got a
2.4.9-ac12 kernel, built on top of a RedHat 7.1 install, using uhci
(not usb-uhci), to be fairly stable.

o Recently the system lost its drive (hardware failure) which gave me
an excuse to upgrade the O.S. SuSE 8.0 installed a "2.4.18-4GB"
kernel which runs fine using a USB mouse.

o Neither of the webcams works with this kernel. Both uhci and usb-
uhci fail with various infinite-loop log messages and register
  dumps.

o I tried building and installing 2.4.19-pre10-ac2 and it's worse --
it doesn't even see the mouse, even if nothing else is plugged into
USB. Again, a variety of error messages, with both drivers.

o I'm going to try plain 2.4.19-pre10 and see what happens. I've kept
up my subscription to this and the -devel list for the past year,
and from what I've seen there seems to be some thrashing going on
with the drivers. I suppose I could go back to 2.4.9-ac12 with my
patches, but I'm not even sure that will run with the SuSE 8.0
  hotplugging, etc.

o Any suggestions for a (relatively) stable kernel to try are welcome.
If anyone's interested in logs, I can provide them, too.
