I have tried that but sadly it hasnt worked out either!!
Anybody out there with any other idea!

The strangest thing is that although the ioctl call returns -1 ( with
invalid arguments in perror) it still sets the contrast, brightness and
hue to ZERO. I have to go to xawtv next time around and improve these
values before my own program can run. 
(Note: i continue to run the prog even when the ioctl fails and the
picture is clearly being shown with excellent frame rate and
resolution).
