Thanks for replying Brad.  I am using a desktop machine.  I use the mouse,
the modem, and some other USB devices np on *ahem* Windows, so I think this
is a software, or linux configuration problem. I don't use a powered hub,
but the power requirements of the mouse and modem are pretty low.  Can
anyone tell me which devices should show up under the /dev/usb directory
tree?  If only the mouse and the modem are connected?
