Solved!!!! Don't ask me why I didn't think of disabling DMA as Steven Gowdy suggested. After that, my USB devices started showing up in USB view and my kernel compile errors disappeared completely.
However, my scanner did not initially work. I got a device busy error. This error has since disappeared as well. After I sold my sole and booted windows, the problem went away. Does anyone have an explanation as to why booting windows would fix my scanner problem?
