I, too, am frustrated after trying to get a solution for my Linux Red
Hat 9. I have an HP laptop that I am using to try out Linux. The Linksys
USB wireless adapter works great on three other computers with Windows.
Everywhere I look to find out where to get help points me to this list.
I'm having a hard time getting any answers (particularly in plain
english). I really am interested in open source, but somebody needs to
make this stuff more user friendly. A little help, please...

Subject: [Linux-usb-users] usb hub hangs, no real help anywhere!

Hi, I wrote to this list before, someone told me just to upgrade the
kernel... and that didnt helped. In fact I had a lot of fun trying a
lot of kernels, downloading sources, (almost a GB so far), and trying
configs compilation files, but NONE of them worked with USB support for
my Laptop Compaq 1210us. In fact only the Rage Mobility Video card and
the sound card worked at the first install. Everything else needed
retouch. But USB is my real need. I suppose that this laptop is the
problem. Duron 850Mhz etc, almost everything VIA chips, works with ACPI,
PCI and ISA pnp, PCMCIA, etc. But listen, other OS, like WinME (1999!
software), WinXP, FreeDOS, MSDOS, from the box recognize that the USB
hub is UHCI... You wouldnt believe me, but I succeded at installing
WinME on my USB harddrive, just for fun. I dont even need to read the
internal hd!!!, just a diskette and the USB harddrive!. I would gladly
exchange the tricks, but I need serious help here. Well, I was working
with RedHat 9.0 kernel 2.4.20-8 (from the box), then 2.4.20-19.9 (RH
last stable), then 2.4.21 (official last stable), then 2.5.75 (desperate
meassures)... all of them booted correctly WITHOUT USB, I mean with
"nousb" as parameter. All of them were then recompiled succesfully, with
very little change, only the USB part to support UHCI, and all of them
hanged abruptly and without any warning at the first boot, as simply as
that. Where? exactly after USB lines. IRQ 5 etc... 2 ports etc. and
then, nothing. If you wnat to help me I would send you the exact lines,
just tell me what kernel! When working with modules, insmod uhci (any),
ohci or ehci didnt worked either. There has to be another way; from my
point of view Linux is useless without USB support. I need the Linux to
support my old hub. This laptop is not new, why the new kernels do
nothing with it?, and for anyones sake! this is a Compaq, not exactly
pirateware!!, do I need to become an expert just to read some file on my
usb harddrive? Im not an expert with Linux, but Im not a newbie with
computers, so please, I need an expert to help me out. Im going to
refuse to use Linux anymore, just for this little thing?
