I, too, am frustrated after trying to get a solution for my Linux Red
Hat 9. I have an HP laptop that I am using to try out Linux.

Apparently using Linux on laptops is a very bad option, mine is a Compaq Presario and nothing works well on it, with RH 9. Unless you know very well your system, before getting the laptop, I mean, you better stay safe with XP. As for I know Linux is _still_ not prepared for general public. It will be just a hacker's thing. Sadly. I refuse to learn how to program device drivers for Linux, and to understand all the little thing of compiling a ever-changing kernel, only to access an external usb hardrive???, something that even DOS can do, just for one old system that I won't keep for more than a year.

I really am interested in open source, but somebody needs to
make this stuff more user friendly. A little help, please...

Well, I paid for my copy, and RH support just sucks a lot, I wonder if RH will return my money three month past after I bought it. That's the time to realize that it was a waste of time, effort and money.

If you need to know about a specific device (like, the Linsys WUSB11 usb
wireless network adaptor, which is what you have here, I take it), a
great resource is the usb device overview at http://www.qbik.ch . Here
are reports from users regarding the WUSB11:
http://www.qbik.ch/usb/devices/search_res.php?pattern=wusb11 .

Look over each of the several reports carefully, there is *a lot* of
information just in the comments from other users attached to some of
the individual reports!

BTW, this probably won't be of help to many people here, but just in
case.... I have the handout from my "USB Devices in Linux" presentation
given to my local lug last year available online. It has quick and easy
recipes for getting the more common usb devices working and info. about
where to find more help. It's available at
http://linuxdojo.com/modules/sections/index.php?op=viewarticle&artid=1 .

Francisco-

I'm sorry to hear that you are not the right user for linux.

Why did you send this rant to *me*?!?

-Patrick

P.S. If indeed your problems are as you describe, did you ever consider that your problem may lay more in the closed, proprietary, cheap-ass, buggy, hardware that compaq tends to provide, rather than with linux?
