I've recently purchased an external USB 2.0 3.5" hard disk enclosure and fitted a 300 gig ide maxtor disk to it.
I've succesfully formatted and mounted the disk with an ext3 partition and read operations are fine.
However, when writing to the disk after a short period of time the disk fails....dmesg reports write timeout errors and the device is automatically remounted read only.
I can't re mount rw until I re intialise the usb kernel modules (which as I've built them into the kernel presently, requires a reboot).
After which point the whole process repeats.
I'm currently running 2.6.0 test9 but also saw the same problem with 2.4.22
It doesn't seem to matter whether its a single large file transfer or a couple of smaller transfers.
I've tried another hard disk in the enclosure with the same results so I'm confident its not the disk hardware.
Does anyone have any thoughts / suggestions?
Relevant dmesg info pasted below.
