The culprit seems to be usb-uhci and/or the VIA chips. But I've been using Linux long enough to know that this might be a completely false assumption. Anyway, to restate the problem: two different wireless usb mice work on SiS ohci, none of them works on two different VIA uhci computers. I asked in alt.os.linux.mandrake whether anybody actually has a wireless usb mouse running on uhci but so far got no response. That doesn't prove anything since aolm is basically a newbie group.
