Sorry, but this is not "the usual problem".  And a hardware defect is not 
so unlikely as you think.

Andre Steinert has reported this same problem.  Follow the thread named

Nobody knows.  You could try getting in touch with technical support at 
Genesys Logic.

Make sure that Legacy USB support is turned off in the computer's BIOS. 
Try running 2.6.10-rc1.
