At this stage I'm about ready to give up also.

More than anything else this looks like a failure of the host controller,
or the USB cable, or the USB interface on the device.  Or even some kind
of electromagnetic interference.  (There was a report posted recently
about some USB devices that stopped working whenever the noisy fluorescent
lights nearby were turned on!)

That's why I recommended seeing if the device works when plugged into a 
different Linux computer.  If it does, that's a good indication the 
problem lies with your computer's USB host controller.

The fact that it used to work under Windows doesn't prove much, because 
Linux and Windows use the hardware in different ways.  It's possible that 
the hardware behaves properly when Windows uses it but not when Linux 
does.  It's also possible that the device itself broke just recently, at 
about the same time you switched away from XP...
