Are you using the same USB cable to attach the player to the desktop and the laptop? Have you tried using a different cable? Sometimes a bad cable can introduce noise and interfere with the USB signals. Also, what operating system is installed on the laptop? Can you easily apply patches and run tests using it instead of the desktop system?
