That is there because 99.9% of the usb disks use the fat file system,
and yanking out a fat disk when it is still mounted can cause bad things
to happen to the filesystem.

As you are using ext3, your chance of lost data is _very_ low.

And if you make sure you always unmount the disk before removing the
cable, you will not have any problems at all.
