I have a Western Digital external hard drive
(wdxb1600jbrnn) that has a "safe shutdown" feature.
This feature prevents the drive from being powered off
while a write operation is in progress. However, this
does not work for me under linux. When I press the
power button to turn the drive off, the light blinks a
few times and the drive remains on. This happens even
after all write operations are complete and I've
unmounted the drive. The only way I know to turn it
off is to unplug the power cable.

Is there a way I can turn this drive off with the
power button instead of by unplugging the cable? I am
using kernel version 2.6.11. Will a newer kernel solve
this problem?

Thanks.
Joey
