Hi Ron,
Have you looked at the USB (User) Guide?
It's home is http://linuxusbguide.sourceforge.net, then
go to the section on mass storage, which is
http://linuxusbguide.sourceforge.net/USB-guide-1.0.5/x393.html
Under SCSI Support in make *config, I would turn on
Verbose SCSI error reporting (until you can mount the
device OK).
