        Vendor is HP.  Opening the box did show that the CD-Writer is
        indeed an IDE device.  Thus  US_SC_8020  seems to be more
        appropriate subclass.

        No, I have only OHCI interfaces at home.  (E.g. Alpha has
        an OHCI type card, others are older PCs, and have none..)

        USB disconnect/reconnect didn't resolve the problem.
        Felt like the device (which has its own power feed)
        went crazy, and thus simple reconnect wasn't sufficient.
        (that "feeling" was based on partial data return from
         reconnected device.)

        I am not at the office, and could try that gadget here
        wit UHCI, returning to the topic after system reboot..
