Please note that the USB spec 2.0, section 4.1.1 still has a star
tiered topology.  Signaling characteristics limit the total length of
the cables and so in section 7.1.1 the spec shows a worst case
scenario of 6 cables, 5 hubs, and a device.  Using 6 cables * 5M/cable
should provide 30M.  5 metre is within the limit of a single cable,
and can be used hub to hub, but it is not the total overall limit.
Using this many hubs and cables is certainly an ugly solution
for his application, and he is well advised to find an alternative,
