There are other problems with the HP CD writers too. They wont burn
video cd, they inorrectly report errors and more.

This is a bug in their firmware.

If its like my IDE drive the problem apparently is HP arent capable of writing 
working firmware. Basically cdrao and other apps queue writes with 30 second
timeouts. The driver bombs them the moment the cache is filling ignoring the
timeout. If you retry them by hand by hacking the cd apps then it sort of works.
Data is written correctly but any custom provided header data is forgotten
by the disk.
