Not necessarily.

However, many userland tools already parse ASCII files in /proc.

Roughly every half year someone on l-k notices this and finds it ugly.
He comes up with a replacement idea. That idea then soon becomes
worse than the problem it tried to solve, at which point Linus refuses
it to get into the kernel.
